I saw a commercial about the ACA being a tax increase
today. The entire commercial was nothing
but lies. Can’t say I’m surprised. I’m disappointed that politics is like this, and
concerned that people will believe this nonsense, but I’m not surprised.

Any ideas or suggestions on how these political commercials (which everybody knows are misleading) can be improved or eliminated? I don't watch live television, and an interesting side effect of not seeing any commercials is that I have become insulated from the main medium of campaign propaganda. If most people stopped watching live t.v. then these political ads would become obsolete and would therefore cease to exist. Unfortunately getting Americans to give up their favorite pastime is currently an absurd proposal. Thoughts?
I haven't been able to figure that one out yet since there can be no limits on political spending. I would imagine that libel laws might be brought into play but it wouldn't be easy. Since these commercials are often knowingly and deliberately false I am surprised that no one has done anything to date - except that it would be politically costly and prevent everyone from doing it. I'm cynical enough to think that might be the reason these commercials just won't go away.
It might be possible for local regulations to come into play. A requirement that fact checking be done - and aired immediately after any commercial - would also help and I don't think that would run afoul of any free speech laws.
Just some off the cuff stuff. Like I said, I haven't figured this one out yet.
I'm also not so certain that even most people, let alone everybody, know these are misleading ads. Many people believe whatever they see and many others believe whatever supports their own position.
